Students engage in supported academic practice on campus, reinforced through structured learning at home. Fundamental subjects - including math, language arts, science, and social studies, are strengthened both through focused skill-building and integrated, project-based work. We support steady progress through individualized goals, regular check-ins, and clear communication with families, with an emphasis on mastery over rushing.
We offer a curated set of recommended academic resource options for language arts and math and work with families to select the best fit for each student, balancing flexibility with intentional structure.
Other subjects—such as social studies, science, financial literacy and entrepreneurship, and character development —are integrated into our cross-curricular project-based learning. This approach allows students to explore these areas in meaningful, real-world contexts rather than as isolated subjects.
A typical day at Northstar is structured to balance focused academics with personal development and collaboration. Students spend two hours each day on individualized academic work in language arts and math. Another two hours are dedicated to real-life and project-based learning where students explore ideas, solve problems, and build together across multiple subjects. An additional hour focuses on physiology, health education, and physical fitness.
Throughout the day, students also engage in Socratic discussions, practice communication skills, set personal goals, and participate in peer mentoring. These elements are woven into the experience, so students develop not only strong academic skills, but also confidence, leadership, and habits that support lifelong learning.
Students learn in mixed-age learning communities rather than being separated strictly by grade level. Research on multi-age classrooms shows that this structure supports social development, peer mentorship, and deeper learning through collaboration. Much like in families and real-world environments, younger students are inspired by older peers, while older students grow in confidence and responsibility as they model and lead. Academic goals remain individualized, ensuring each student is appropriately supported and challenged regardless of age.
Character development is woven into daily life at Northstar. Our community is anchored in the Apogee Code — a shared commitment to integrity, bravery, compassion, honesty, honor, loyalty, and respect. Students are taught to communicate thoughtfully, take responsibility for their actions, and resolve conflict constructively. When issues arise, we address them early with clarity, guidance, accountability, and restorative support.
Our environment is interactive and student-centered. Rather than rows of desks and extended lectures, students participate in collaborative projects and discussions, alongside dedicated periods of focused, individual academic work. Coaches set clear expectations, provide structure, and mentor closely, while students take meaningful ownership of their goals and growth.
We are currently working on becoming approved vendors with several homeschool charter schools. Once that process is complete, families will be able to apply their charter funds toward our program fees based on their charter school’s guidelines.
